Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), aka Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), is a multiple symptom, multi-system syndrome which usually affects one or more extremities but may affect any part of the body.
Development of RSD does not depend on the seriousness of the initial injury – it may even be perceived as minor or inconsequential. The sympathetic nervous system, for reasons not fully understood, functions abnormally after the injury. Common symptoms:
- Pain that can be moderate to severe
- Neuropsychological deficits
- Constitutional symptoms (lethargy, tiredness, weakness)
- Respiratory complications (dystonia in chest wall muscles)
- Endocrine system dysfunction (low baseline cortisol levels)
- Urological system dysfunction (difficulty urinating or incontinence)
- GI dysfunction (IBS, nausea, constipation, vomiting, gastroparesis, etc.)
